KSA MULTIPASS
More than just a bus pass; better than a U-Pass.
Where do I get my U-Pass?
The U-Pass is not yet available to students at any school in the Metro Vancouver region except UBC, SFU, Langara and Capilano. All schools and student associations in the region are working together with the provincial government and Translink to get the U-Pass to all other students as soon as possible. It turned out to be more complicated than expected, so it is not ready yet. But everyone is working hard to set up the program as quickly as possible.
What is a U-Pass?
U-Pass BC is a program offered by the provincial government to all post-secondary schools in BC. It provides unlimited access to public transportation services at a discounted rate for all students at participating schools.
How is KSA Multipass different?
The KSA Multipass bundles the U-Pass with services that make it cheaper and easier for Kwantlen students to live a healthy and environmentally-responsible lifestyle.
The KSA understands that public transit is not available in all communities, particularly in some areas of South Surrey and Langley. The Multipass ensures that there is value in the pass for all students, even those who cannot access public transit.
Students told us they wanted services such as the following:
- fitness centre pass
- car sharing program
- direct shuttle between Kwantlen campuses
- bicycle lockers
We are working to build as many of these new services into the KSA Multipass as we can.
How Much Will Your Multipass Cost?
When we asked students what they want in a U-Pass program, over 80% responded that they would be willing to pay $45/month, if it included a range of services. We have been working to fulfill that direction. Kwantlen’s price will be different than most other schools, but it will be a significant reduction in cost from a full price transit pass and provide much more than is available at other schools. The Multipass will cost less than $45/month while delivering huge value.
When Will You Get Your U-Pass?
The government has announced that the U-Pass BC program that will be “offered” to all post-secondary institutions in BC starting in September 2010. Unfortunately, that doesn’t mean students will be able to get a pass in September. The contract between Translink and all the schools wanting to join the program is still being negotiated. A lot of technical work must be done by the school to keep track of the passes. The program also has to be approved by students in a referendum. The earliest date that this program could be in place is by the spring of 2011.
What Can I Do To Make Sure I Get My U-Pass As Soon As Possible?
Talk to your friends and classmates. Tell them why it is you want the U-Pass, and that when a referendum happens it is important for them to show up and vote. Make sure they vote for it, or it might not happen.
Why Should I Have To Pay For a U-Pass If I Don’t Use Public Transit?
Aside from all the services that will be available to all students, increased use of public transit benefits everyone. When more students ride the bus to school, there is less traffic, less pressure on parking facilities, less pollution being produced, and more efficient use of taxpayer funded transportation services. Everyone wins with those benefits, even people who continue to drive.
